Long bio (250 words)

Dr. Jeff Wang (published academically as Yung-Fu Wang) is a corporate trainer, teaching coach and gamification researcher from Taiwan. He began his career on construction sites and in insurance sales before becoming a professional trainer, and for more than 20 years he has taught engineers, executives, doctors, nurses and teachers how to present and how to teach. His clients in Taiwan include TSMC, Foxconn, MediaTek, Siemens, Novartis, Deloitte, Google and IKEA, and he received TSMC’s Excellent Instructor Award.

He has trained more than 10,000 educators, from K-12 teachers to university professors and medical faculty. Curious about why his gamified classes worked, he returned to school and earned a Ph.D. in Information Management. With his co-authors he ran two Delphi studies asking expert instructors which gamification elements matter most — one in corporate training (Entertainment Computing, Best Paper of 2022) and one in medical education (Medical Education Online, 2024). Both rank among the top 1% most-cited papers in their field and year, and the 2024 study is in the top 0.1% (OpenAlex). The results became the AFFECT framework: aligned goals, immediate feedback, fair and clear rules, escalating challenge, competition in teams, and trying without risk.

He has written 10 books in Chinese on teaching, presentation and personal growth, and founded F Academy, an online learning company. Gamification in Training and Teaching is his first book in English. Outside the classroom he plays jazz saxophone, makes espresso and is a PADI Divemaster.

Interview topics

  • Why badges scored lowest. What 14 expert trainers rated as key in gamification — and what they didn’t. Sample question: If not badges, what actually motivates adult learners?
  • Engagement without games. The AFFECT framework and how to apply it to a course you already teach. Sample question: What is the first thing to fix in a boring course?
  • Engagement in the AI era. When content is free, the live session is where learning happens — and where design matters most. Sample question: What can a trainer do that an AI course can’t?
  • Gamifying medical education. What medical educators prioritized in our Delphi study, and how it applies to clinical teaching. Sample question: Is gamification serious enough for medicine?
  • From construction site to Ph.D. A trainer’s path from practice to research — and back to the classroom. Sample question: Why go back to school mid-career?
